Stump’d!

A wood chopping, raccoon lauching alternate controller game featured at ALT.CTRL.GDC 2023

About

Stump'd is an immersive arcade-style Alternate Controller game, challenging players to engage in a dynamic experience where they skillfully chop logs and dispel our mischievous raccoon character, Borf. Utilizing a physical axe, players interact with the game by chopping down logs onto our detection pad. The foot pedal provides players with the means to effectively dispose of Borf when they arrive at the stump.

The game introduces a diverse array of log varieties and Borf types, ensuring a consistently engaging and unpredictable gameplay. Players are required to execute precise combinations with corresponding items to accrue points

My contributions relate towards the game design, the functionality of the controller, and being the controller artist for our GDC iteration changes.

In just five days, our team created a unique alternate controller game using circuit connections and a Makey Makey board. The initial prototype, made from cardboard, paper flowers, and construction paper, highlights our quick and resourceful approach. Despite the tight timeline, our game seamlessly blends physical and digital elements, showcasing our ability to deliver innovative solutions swiftly.

ALT.CTRL.GDC Implementations

We upgraded from cardboard to wood, replacing the entire structure. Additionally, I used laser burning to imprint logos and text onto both the base stump and the foot pedal. The aesthetics were enhanced with the re-addition of grass on the sides, along with the inclusion of yarn vines and additional flowers.

Our team crafted a paper mache stump that seamlessly fits into the base. We integrated a tin foil detection pad and ran all the wires internally for a clean and efficient design.
